New York can lead the way in campaign finance reform

By Howard Dean and Christine Todd Whitman CNN June 13, 2013 (CNN) -- As former governors, we were honored to serve the people of our respective states. While we represent different political parties, we are united in our belief that government has stopped working for the American people -- and that real reform of the electoral process is needed to get it back on track. [...]

Shame on Congress

By Christine Todd Whitman April 18, 2013 I was extremely disappointed to see the gun legislation voted down in the Senate on Wednesday. When 90% of Americans support a piece of legislation that is then voted down by the Congress, something in our democracy is broken. How can we stand by and let a lobbying group thwart the will of a majority of Americans? It can only happen when the majority sits back and assumes commonsense will prevail. Perhaps this will be the wake up call that people need – we cannot continue to allow our government to be controlled by a few. We must start to demand policy over politics and the only way to do that is to show up at the polls. [...]

Republican Senators Should Support Hagel

By Christine Todd Whitman NJ.com January 7, 2013 The news over the weekend that Republican senators are preparing for a tough nomination process for former Sen. Chuck Hagel reveals political posturing at its most feckless and trivial. Sen. Hagel will be named President Obama’s next nominee for Secretary of Defense today; he would succeed Leon Panetta and be the first former enlisted soldier to run the Pentagon. [...]

Moderation would have worked

By Christine Todd Whitman Politico November 7, 2012 I am disappointed that Mitt Romney didn’t win the presidency yesterday, particularly because I saw what a reasonable governor he was in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, that reasonable governor was not the candidate running for president. While this latest battle for the White House may be complete, the war for the direction of the Republican Party remains very much at hand. As my party wrestles over its course, we should not ignore that Romney might have won had he campaigned with the centrist mindset with which he governed. [...]

UN and The View

By Christine Todd Whitman NJ.com September 24, 2012 While world leaders gathered yesterday for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, President Obama left Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to represent the U.S., preferring to appear on daytime talk show "The View". While Obama did appear at the UN this morning, his neglect of world leaders yesterday was both a poor prioritization of time and further evidence of just how superficial our campaigns have become. [...]

The Chemical Threat to America

By Christine Todd Whitman The New York Times August 29, 2012 SINCE Sept. 11, 2001, the American government, under two presidents, has taken unprecedented steps to ensure the safety of its citizens. Unfortunately, more than a decade later, a major flaw in our national security remains, leaving millions of Americans at risk. It’s a flaw that policy makers have known about for years but not yet done enough to fix. [...]

My Bright Idea: Christine Todd Whitman on Nutrient Trading

By Christine Todd Whitman Bloomberg Businessweek August 23, 2012 In January 2003 the Environmental Protection Agency created a nutrient trading program for water within a watershed. Nutrient trading is a market-based approach for protecting and improving water quality. After establishing the total amount of nutrients that may enter a watershed, the total amount of allowed pollution is then divided among the participating sources. Sources able to reduce pollution at a low cost are incentivized to reduce nutrient loads beyond their required level and to then sell the excess credits. Through those trades, pollution reduction efforts get reallocated to the sources that have the lowest-cost opportunities to cut pollution, reducing the total cost of improving water quality. [...]
