Gov. Christie at the Convention

By Christine Todd Whitman NJ.com August 15, 2012 I am a proud New Jerseyan following the announcement that Gov. Chris Christie will be a keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention at the end of August. As co-host of the 1996 Republican convention in San Diego, I have seen firsthand the challenges and opportunities that come with being featured on such a nationally prominent platform. [...]

A New McCarthyism

By Christine Todd Whitman NJ.com July 20, 2012 I am appalled by Congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s questioning the loyalty of Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She and the other representatives who joined in the allegations that Abedin has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood should be ashamed. Is this the way we now treat faithful government officials who happen to have immigrant parents? I applaud Sen. John McCain for standing up against members of our party and these egregious claims. Secretary Clinton and I disagree on many policy views, but knowing the many challenges of her job and her aide's jobs, I have tremendous respect for their hard work on behalf of our country. [...]

Preserve Delaware Bay

By Christine Todd Whitman NJ.com June 15, 2012 I recently celebrated the release of a new book about the people and wildlife of Delaware Bay: Life Along the Delaware Bay. The book very colorfully informs us about the incredible array of important wildlife and fish of this great bay, as well as about the bay's rich cultural resources, and the area's rich fishing and agricultural history. The book's primary focus, however, is the Delaware Bay's monumental importance as a shorebird migratory stopover, one of the most crucial in the world. [...]

The Center Must Hold

By Christine Todd Whitman Democracy June 13, 2012 For the past year we have watched Republican presidential candidates fall over one another to prove who can best pander to the far-right base. Of course, this behavior is not unique to Republicans; increasingly in recent elections we’ve seen candidates from both parties move to the extremes to get their party’s nomination, then attempt to veer back toward the center in the general election. This pattern forces candidates to abandon popular, practical solutions in favor of unworkable positions backed by their more extreme bases. [...]

By Christine Todd Whitman New York Times April 19, 2012 To the Editor: “Report Faults Online Services Over Reliance on Coal and Nuclear Power” (Business Day, April 18) discusses a Greenpeace report suggesting that emissions-free nuclear power and coal constitute “dirty energy.” [...]

Generating electricity and jobs

By Christine Todd Whitman McClatchy-Tribune News Service December 22, 2011 As state leaders struggle to meet rising energy demand in a sluggish economy, some are embracing nuclear energy as a solution that provides jobs as well as affordable electricity. Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and Virginia are among the states that are expanding the role of nuclear in their energy portfolios to provide a stable power supply that powers economic growth. [...]

Nuclear power needs to remain central to our energy mix

By Christine Todd Whitman The Hill 15 November, 2011 Today, the U.S. is undergoing a decisive change in how we use and produce energy. A green revolution is seeing wind and solar power grow at unprecedented rates. In the first five months of 2011, wind generation had grown by 35 percent, and solar generation grew by 49 percent over the same time period in 2010. Coal generation, for comparison, saw a 5 percent decrease in that same timespan. [...]
