As noted by Peggy Fisher’s May 17 letter, I too have been a Mitt Romney backer from the get-go and am happy to see that he is really gathering steam as we head into the convention season. However, as an alternative choice for running mate I would submit Christie Whitman, former governor of New Jersey and administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency under George W. Bush.

She was interviewed on CNBC recently regarding her views on the upcoming election and other matters, and as always, comported herself in an intelligent, forthright manner. Her background would appeal to the libertarian, independent, dissatisfied Democrat, and her gender would showcase the Republican Party as more woman friendly, which to date, in many eyes, it has not been.

As a lifelong Republican, who has been unhappy with most politicians of late, I could really get behind a Romney-Whitman team.
